Maritime Bell has reported that the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has recently sanctioned a Marshall Islands-based company along with two of its tankers for alleged involvement in transporting Russian and Iranian oil. This measure is part of OFAC’s increased scrutiny of the shipping industry.
Targeted Vessels and Dark Fleet Expansion
The sanctioned tankers include a vessel flagged in the Cook Islands and another registered in Gabon. Gabon’s flag registry, which has seen substantial growth through “dark fleet” activities—vessels operating with minimal oversight—stands out in this development.
Wider Impact on Global Shipping
These sanctions form part of OFAC’s larger strategy, having recently added multiple crude tankers and segments of Russia’s LNG fleet to its watchlist. This signals a heightened regulatory focus on global shipping practices, potentially restricting untracked oil trading worldwide.
