ESL Shipping has embarked on a project to build 1A ice-class ships equipped with advanced technology and designed for high cargo capacity. The project, with an estimated cost of EUR 186 million, is expected to be completed between 2024 and 2028. There is also potential to expand the order with additional vessels.

Focus on Energy Efficiency and Flexibility

These next-generation ships are engineered to offer market-leading energy efficiency, flexible cargo space design, and reduced operational costs. The vessels will be constructed at the China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Nanjing) Co., Ltd., in Nanjing, China, with the first ships entering service in the third quarter of 2027 and the fourth vessel following in the first quarter of 2028.

Sustainability Leadership and Nordic Green Transition

Rolf Jansson, CEO of Aspo, highlights that this investment in fossil-free, handy-sized vessels builds on the success of the low-emission hybrid coasters. Mikki Koskinen, Managing Director of ESL Shipping, emphasized that their sustainability strategy is aligned with providing reliable infrastructure for the Nordic green transition industries, developed in collaboration with industrial partners.

Strengthened Financial Position and Growth Opportunities

As previously announced on February 8, 2024, ESL Shipping has bolstered its financial position with an equity injection of EUR 45 million. The company is also exploring various ship ownership and financing options, including pooling, to accelerate growth and expand services. These efforts align with Aspo’s portfolio strategy and financial objectives.
