Port news highlighted that TotalEnergies has signed a charter agreement with Spanish shipowner Ibaizabal for an 18,600m³ Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) bunker vessel to enhance its global bunkering presence. The vessel, currently under construction in China, will join TotalEnergies’ fleet by the end of 2026 and is expected to support LNG bunkering in hubs such as Oman, which is linked to the Marsa LNG project. This project will provide LNG to shipping in the Gulf, expanding clean energy options in the region.
LNG as a Cleaner Marine Fuel
The newly chartered vessel, meeting the highest environmental standards, will supply LNG to diverse vessels, including containerships, tankers, and cruise ships, across TotalEnergies’ LNG hubs. As a transition fuel, LNG reduces greenhouse gas emissions by around 20% and cuts nitrogen oxides by up to 85%, while almost eliminating sulfur oxides and fine particles, benefiting port areas and coastal communities.
TotalEnergies’ Commitment to LNG and Sustainability Goals
TotalEnergies ranked as the third-largest LNG player globally, is committed to increasing the role of natural gas in its energy mix to nearly 50% by 2030, furthering carbon reduction and supporting sustainable shipping through bio and synthetic LNG options. The company has invested heavily in LNG infrastructure to aid customers in transitioning to lower-carbon marine fuel and aims to phase out methane emissions in collaboration with local partners.
