The Pacific Merchant Shipping Association is an independent, not-for-profit association of terminal owners, operators, and ocean carriers on the U.S. West Coast. PMSA made some major air quality improvement announcements in 2023 regarding the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles, reports Container News.
Emission Inventory Highlights
Port of Long Beach, Port of Los Angeles Reduce Emissions to Record Levels According to two new emissions inventories—the Port of Long Beach 2023 emissions inventory and the Port of Los Angeles 2023 emissions inventory—the reductions are attributed to the concerted efforts by the maritime industry.
Record Reductions Achieved
The San Pedro Bay Ports achieved their largest emissions reductions ever in 2023 compared to the baseline year of 2005, surpassing the Clean Air Action Plan goals:
- 91% reduction in diesel particulate matter (DPM)
- Achieved 72% nitrogen oxide (NOx) reduction
- 98% reduction in SOx, which is sulfur oxides
- 20% reduction in greenhouse gases (GHG)
Acknowledging Success
“These 2023 emission reductions are the most dramatic ever seen at our Ports,” stated Jacqueline Moore, Vice President of PMSA. “Our improvements in air quality over the past two decades are a real success story due to efforts and investments by PMSA members and our Port of LA and Long Beach partners.”
