China’s Dominance In Global Green Vessel Orders

According to China Daily reports China secured over 70% of global orders for green vessels in the first three quarters of 2024, covering all major ship types. Chinese shipyards took in 87.11 million deadweight tons in new orders, a 51.9% year-on-year increase, driven by advancements in green technologies. This accounted for 74.7% of global orders, positioning China as the world leader in green shipbuilding.

Notable Production and Exports in Green Shipbuilding

The country’s shipbuilding output reached 36.34 million dwt, making up 55.1% of the global total. Shanghai’s Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding delivered 17 vessels this year, with additional LNG carriers slated for completion by year’s end. In Jiangsu province alone, the export value of various high-tech vessels grew by 75.1% to $9.78 billion in the first eight months, demonstrating China’s robust export capabilities in high-value, eco-friendly vessels.

Technological Advancements Fueling Green Transformation

China’s shipbuilding industry accelerated its shift to green technologies in 2023, seeing a rapid increase in LNG- and methanol-powered vessels. Green-powered ships, which represent 57% of global market share, are progressing toward commercialization, including hydrogen and hybrid-powered vessels. High-efficiency designs, like self-unloading bulk carriers, are emerging, providing versatile and rapid unloading capabilities.

Driven by global emission reduction goals, the industry focuses on energy-efficient vessel designs and diverse fuel solutions. These advancements, from methanol and ammonia to hybrid systems, are reshaping the sector’s environmental footprint. Industry experts foresee a steady growth trajectory in green shipbuilding as China continues to lead in eco-friendly maritime innovation.
