IMO And MTCC Asia Join Forces For Biofouling Management

81

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has partnered with the Maritime Technology Cooperation Centre of Asia (MTCC Asia) to address biofouling and the spread of invasive aquatic species. Biofouling, which involves microorganisms and plants accumulating on submerged ship surfaces, poses risks to marine biodiversity by introducing invasive species to new environments.

Capacity Building and Innovative Technology Pilots

The partnership will enable capacity-building and technological innovation for biofouling management in countries like Indonesia, the Philippines, China, and Malaysia. MTCC Asia will co-organize workshops, offer training, and support technology demonstration pilots to promote best practices for biofouling management across the maritime sector.

Enhanced Regional Expertise in Sustainable Biofouling Solutions

With this collaboration, MTCC Asia will expand its role in fostering sustainable biofouling practices. The TEST Biofouling Project, funded by Norway, is pivotal in supporting the region through technology transfer, pilot demonstrations, and the IMO Biofouling Guidelines, ensuring robust biofouling management across Asian maritime industries.
