Intercargo’s Concern Over RightShip’s Bulk Carrier Age Limit

  • Shipowners urge RightShip to reconsider bulk carrier age limit changes
  • Concerns raised over RightShip’s new vetting rules for bulk carriers
  • Calls for delay in RightShip’s decision on bulk carrier age limits

On 15th October, 2024 in London, INTERCARGO members expressed grave concerns over the RightShip decision to cut the minimum age of vetting inspection applicable for bulkers. The topic was raised during the Executive Committee meeting of the Association held in London, reports Intercargo.

Lack of consultation with key stakeholders

In implementing this reduction without consulting the owners and operators of bulkers, the stakeholders directly affected by it, the age limit was reduced. Important operational decisions, according to INTERCARGO, should involve all parties concerned, the stakeholders directly affected by a certain development, in this case.

Support for Safety.

While INTERCARGO would support efforts to increase shipping safety and quality, changes to operations of this nature need to be better balanced with the industry. Indeed, through cooperation, a fair and balanced transition process is ensured, as adequate time is allowed for adjustments-considering again the added operational stress and workload factors on seafarers.

Call to Implement a New Age Limit

Intercargo wishes Rightship to reconsider the planned timetable for the implementation of the new age limit on vetting inspections. Since the current regime was adopted just two years ago, a delay in the implementation would give ship operators and seafarers ample time to adapt to the changed circumstances. Delaying the changes would also ensure safety and efficiency persisted to their high levels.

Promotion of Open Cooperation

INTERCARGO continues to work in collaboration with all stakeholders in the maritime sector for a safer, more efficient, and more sustainable future of dry bulk shipping. The Association called on RightShip and other industry leaders to pursue this same approach when decisions made bear an impact on the whole maritime community.
