The Northwest Seaport Alliance said its total international imports reached record peak levels for the month of September, the seventh straight month in which volumes have increased at NWSA, reports Container News.
Import Performance
International imports at NWSA increased by 9.9% during August and 0.9% compared with September 2023. Full initiation volume informs that there’s steady growth to the international trade by the ports of Seattle and Tacoma.
Export Decline and Import Surge
Though the ports received endless imports, the overall international exports dipped by 7.4%. Still, the overall international volume in September recorded a year-over-year growth of 0.6% to reveal levelled trade activities.
Container Volumes Growth
Container Traffic In September 2024, the ports processed 334,518 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), which translates to an average modest increase of 0.9% from the same period in 2023. For volumes year-to-date, they reached 2,472,421 TEUs, up by 12.1% from the previous year. Full imports are up 19.1%, and exports are also up well, 10.8%.
Rail Volumes on the Rise
NWSA reported a high growth rate in the volumes moved on rail, at 21.8% year to date. It processes an average of three to five trains per month, with each train carrying an average of 200 to 220 containers.
Breakbulk and Auto Cargo Trends
While container and rail volumes improved, cargo types remained mixed. Breakbulk volumes decreased by 7.6%, or 329,074 metric tons for the period in January through September. Auto volumes increased by 6.5%. Its total number of units moved during the same period reached 264,810.
