The NorthStandard Club has issued a warning advising vessels to avoid ports in southern Lebanon, including Sidon, Tyre, Jieh, and the Zahrani oil terminals, due to ongoing security concerns. However, the Club has also provided updates on other Lebanese ports, confirming that they are operating normally and safely under Security Level 1.
Status of Lebanese Ports
According to the Ministry of Transport, all Lebanese ports are currently operating under Security Level 1, which indicates normal security conditions. Despite the Club’s advisory for southern ports, it reassures that other ports in the country are functioning safely. The Club recommends that ship operators maintain close communication with local ship agents to receive daily updates, as is the practice among shipowners whose vessels are calling at these ports.
Further Guidance for Shipowners
The NorthStandard Club has also advised that all embassies in Lebanon remain operational, and shipowners are encouraged to consult their national authorities for official information. This advice is part of the Club’s broader strategy to ensure that all parties stay well-informed amid the current circumstances.
Ports Operating at Security Level 1
The Club has confirmed that several key ports, including Beirut, Zouk, Jounieh, Amchit, Selaata, Chekka, and Tripoli, are functioning under Security Level 1. This designation follows the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code, which outlines three security levels based on the assessed threat environment.
- Security Level 1: Normal security conditions with low risk of incidents, where standard safety protocols are sufficient.
- Security Level 2: Triggered by an increased risk, requiring additional security measures to prevent potential threats.
- Security Level 3: Reserved for situations where a security incident is imminent or likely, necessitating the strictest security protocols.
This system allows ports to adjust their security operations in response to changing risk levels, ensuring safe and secure maritime activities.
