Ohmium International, a leading company in the green hydrogen space focused on developing proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer solutions, announced today that it has entered into a term sheet with renewable energy company SwitcH2 BV for the supply of PEM electrolyzers to the OFFSET project-an industrial-scale, offshore floating green hydrogen and ammonia synthesis facility designed to operate off the coast of Southern Europe based on proven floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) technologies, reports Offshore Energy.

Hydrogen Production

The OFFSET project will install Ohmium’s advanced PEM electrolyzer solutions aboard a 268-meter FPSO vessel, amounting to 300 MW. Electrolysers will convert green hydrogen production using nearshore solar and wind power together with the treated seawater.

Floating Facility

The green hydrogen will be fed into a deck-mounted ammonia synthesis unit on board. The green ammonia produced will be offloaded onto ammonia carriers for transportation to off-takers. At completion, the facility is expected to produce up to 55,000 tonnes of green hydrogen and nearly 300,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually, enough to power several oceangoing vessels for at least a year or more.

Project Timeline and Government Support

OFFSET is targeting the production of green ammonia by the year 2029, and is being supported by the Dutch government and has received AiP from the classification society DNV. It is led by SwitcH2 BV in partnership with its shareholder BW Offshore for this revolutionary undertaking.

Excitement for the Innovative Project

Arne Ballantine, Ohmium CEO, commented: “Ohmium is thrilled to be part of this cutting-edge and transformative project. We appreciate the expertise that SwitcH2 Joint Venture brings to offshore floating production, and their vision in leveraging renewables and green hydrogen for the creation of green ammonia.”

“The market for green ammonia is poised to grow exponentially in the coming decades, especially as a source of clean fuel for the global shipping industry, and Ohmium is looking forward to collaborating with SwitcH2 in helping address that need.”

Praise for Ohmium’s Innovative Solutions

Bob Rietveldt, SwitcH2’s Director and Co-Founder, stated: “We are pleased to have Ohmium join us in making this pioneering project possible. Ohmium’s compact, hyper-modular PEM electrolyzers are ideally suited for the space-constrained FPSO setting. Their product delivers high efficiency, and the comprehensive, standardized design enables flexible and rapid installation, at scale.”
