GCMD And Hanwha Ocean Partner To Accelerate Maritime Decarbonisation

5

The Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD) and Hanwha Ocean have announced a five-year strategic partnership to promote maritime decarbonisation. Their collaboration focuses on alternative low-/zero-carbon fuels, energy-efficient technologies, and onboard carbon capture to support industry-wide emission reduction goals.

Strengthening Green Innovation in Maritime Shipping

  • This partnership marks GCMD’s first collaboration with a South Korean shipbuilding entity, leveraging South Korea’s leadership in eco-friendly shipbuilding.
  • Hanwha Ocean, a subsidiary of Hanwha Group, integrates its expertise in energy solutions, such as hydrogen and ammonia, to develop sustainable maritime technologies.

Advancing Ammonia and Carbon Capture Technologies

  • Ammonia-powered vessels: Hanwha Ocean is developing ammonia-fuelled vessels and collaborating on ammonia value chain initiatives with GCMD.
  • Onboard Carbon Capture and Storage (OCCS): Hanwha Ocean has secured Approval in Principle for OCCS on LNG carriers. GCMD explores OCCS feasibility with maritime stakeholders, showing potential for 20% emission reductions.

Collaborative Path Towards Decarbonisation Goals

  • This partnership aligns with IMO’s GHG reduction targets, focusing on pilots, trials, and scalable solutions for industry-wide adoption.
  • Hanwha Ocean and GCMD will co-develop solutions, combining expertise to reduce barriers to decarbonisation through innovative technologies and market leadership.

The GCMD-Hanwha Ocean partnership signals a new phase in maritime decarbonisation by integrating expertise in fuel alternatives, carbon capture, and green shipping. Together, they aim to accelerate the transition to sustainable shipping while creating economic value for the maritime sector.
