COSCO SHIPPING Ports has acquired a 12.5% stake in Thai Laemchabang Terminal (TLT) and a 30% stake in Hutchison Laemchabang Terminal (HLT), further expanding its influence in Thailand’s shipping industry, reports Conainter News.
Signing Ceremony Held in Vietnam
The agreement was formally signed in Vietnam on 23 October, representing a strategic investment of about US$110 million by COSCO.
The acquisition covers Berths A2 in TLT and Berths A3, C1-C2, and D1-D3 in HLT. Once all facilities, including those under construction, are operational, the total capacity will be around 6.7 million TEUs annually.
Significance of Laem Chabang Port
Laem Chabang Port is Thailand’s largest deep-water port, located near Bangkok.
It serves as the country’s key international container hub, handling about 80% of total throughput.
Thai Government Support and Future Growth
COSCO highlighted Thai government support for infrastructure projects like the Thailand Eastern Economic Corridor.
It will contribute to ongoing expansion in the port sector.
