The Mormugao Port Authority’s (MPT) proposed domestic and international cruise terminal project, which will offer Ro-Ro and Ro-Pax services, has received approval from the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA), reports Maritime Gateway.
GCZMA approves MPA’s cruise terminal proposal
In order to obtain CRZ clearance for the construction of a domestic and international cruise port and related amenities at the Mormugao harbor, the MPA has presented a proposal to the GCZMA. According to the project’s proponent, the initiative is beneficial to the country.
The idea was approved by the coastal authority at its meeting earlier this month. With an estimated cost of Rs 101.72 crore, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways will fund Rs 50.86 crore of the project through the Sagarmala Scheme, the Ministry of Tourism will fund Rs 50 crore through the “Assistance to Central Agencies for Tourism Infrastructure Development Scheme,” and the MPA will handle the remaining amount.
The port will have a ropeway, a quick ferry service, a commercial hub, and a Ro-Ro facility for cars. Additionally, it will feature duty-free retail stores, lounges, a food court, a parking lot, waiting lounges, luggage carousels, immigration desks, check-in counters, and passenger and baggage handling rooms. In response to the rise in cruise ships and guests, the MPA is building the terminal.
The modern terminal structure will occupy 9,900 square meters. Covering 3,700 square meters, the ancillary commercial structure will feature an immersive shopping area targeted at cruise travelers and made available to the general public.
The MPA now has a cruise berth that is 450 meters long and can accommodate cruise ships with ease. When two cruise ships make a port visit at the same time, a second berth—currently leased to the Indian Coast Guard and the Indian Navy—is utilized.
