The Port of Rotterdam has moved very far in optimizing ship movements and reducing the emission load through modern Geofence systems. This system is the first phase of the port’s Just-in-Time (JIT) sailing project intended to optimize ship movement and reduce CO₂ emissions, reports Port of Rotterdam.

The Geofence system

Since mid-October, Geofence has been informing terminal planners and shipping agents in real-time when the vessel crosses the geofence 240 nautical miles from the Maascenter buoy. Upon entering the PPA Area, an Actual Time of Arrival is sent; this proves to increase the accuracy of scheduling within a reduced waiting time to make better use of available resources.

Benefits of Just-in-Time Sailing

Just-in-time sailing has brought fantastic environmental and economic advantages for inland shipping. The Low Carbon GIA report of 2022 stated that the JIT arrivals for the last 12 hours of a voyage would decrease the fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 4.23%. It is found in line with the GreenVoyage2050 initiative by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in collaboration with Norway.

Collaborative Effort for a Sustainable Future

The deployment of the Geofence system is a collaborative task between the terminal operators, shipping agents, and nautical service providers. Data shared among them enhances its reliability . It supports Rotterdam toward the goal of a greener and more efficient port operation.
