LR And HHI Collaborate On Ammonia-Powered Container Ship

Lloyd’s Register (LR) and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) have signed an Approval in Principle (AiP) for a 15,300 TEU ammonia-powered dual-fuel container ship. This design, part of a joint development project, is the first to feature ammonia-powered dual-fuel engines suitable for ultra-large container ships (ULCS). With a twin-skeg design and strategically placed ammonia tanks, the vessel aims to enhance safety and crew habitability while meeting low-carbon requirements.

Overcoming Challenges of Ammonia as Marine Fuel

Ammonia’s potential as a zero-carbon fuel is balanced by challenges due to its toxicity and technical limitations. HHI’s design positions ammonia fuel tanks away from crew areas, addressing safety and operational concerns for this 365-meter vessel. LR has conducted feasibility assessments on fuel storage and supply, ensuring the design’s compliance with safety standards.
