HD HHI And DNV Advance Ammonia Fuel Safety In Shipping

274

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) is developing safety-driven designs for ammonia-fueled vessels, addressing challenges posed by ammonia’s toxicity and corrosive nature. Innovations include an optimized ammonia tank, advanced fire safety systems, and enhanced ammonia release mitigation, all aimed at minimizing the risk of toxic exposure on container ships’ upper decks. The designs have achieved Approval in Principle (AiP) from DNV, supporting wider adoption of ammonia as a marine fuel.

Mitigating Ammonia Risks

To enhance safety, HD HHI conducted extensive gas dispersion analyses for fuel pipe leakage, identifying potential toxic zones. Results showed that their ammonia release mitigation system significantly reduces hazardous areas, ensuring safer working spaces across the vessel. This development addresses essential criteria for ammonia’s safe commercialization in maritime applications.

Leadership Insights

Seung-ho Jeon, HD HHI’s CTO, affirmed the commitment to sustainable shipping through ammonia-fueled innovation. Vidar Dolonen of DNV emphasized that safety is crucial to ammonia’s adoption as a green fuel, stating that DNV proudly supports HD HHI in paving the way toward a sustainable future in the maritime industry.
