DP World has marked a major achievement with the opening of its £350 million all-electric fourth berth at London Gateway, setting a new global standard in low-carbon logistics. This landmark launch, accompanied by the arrival of MSC Sena, introduces an all-electric fleet of vehicles and equipment at one of the UK’s most advanced logistics hubs, according to Multimodal UK.

Key Features and Impacts of the New Berth

The 430-meter berth boosts the port’s trading capacity by over 33%, thanks to Europe’s largest quay cranes, electric straddle carriers, and automatic stacking cranes. This expansion not only strengthens supply chains but also reduces turnaround times, enhances global connectivity, and adds 200 new permanent jobs. Situated within Thames Freeport, the new berth is a pivotal part of DP World’s plan to make London Gateway the UK’s largest container port by trading volume within the next five years.

Commitment to Sustainable Growth

In line with the UK Government’s International Investment Summit, DP World recently committed £1 billion for the construction of fifth and sixth berths at London Gateway, amplifying the port’s handling capacity and supporting future mega-ships. DP World’s CEO of Ports & Terminals UK, Ernst Schulze, emphasized that this investment supports DP World’s ambition to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

“We have already invested more than £2 billion in the building of our modern and efficient facility at London Gateway… The new berth, alongside our £1 billion investment in additional berths, will further enable us to service the largest vessels in operation worldwide while advancing our goal to be net-zero by 2050.”

Enhanced Logistics Capabilities

The all-electric berth operates alongside London Gateway Logistics Park, which boasts 9.25 million sq. ft. of warehousing, with multimodal connectivity to domestic and international rail and road networks. The new berth reinforces London Gateway’s status as a crucial hub for sustainable logistics, advancing the competitiveness of its customers and supporting the UK’s economy and environmental goals.
