- EXMAR launches EXMAR LPG France, set to operate six dual-fuel LPG/ammonia gas carriers.
- The first-of-its-kind MGCs are under construction, with delivery starting in Q1 2025.
- Collaboration with Seapeak, WinGD, and Wärtsilä to power and equip the ammonia-fueled fleet.
Belgian shipping company EXMAR has established a new subsidiary, EXMAR LPG France, to manage six dual-fuel LPG/ammonia midsize gas carriers (MGCs). The company announced this in its third-quarter report on November 8, reports Offshore Energy.
Pioneering Dual-Fuel Technology
The new MGCs will be the first oceangoing vessels powered by dual-fuel engines that can operate on ammonia, advancing environmental goals in maritime transport.
EXMAR, through a joint venture with Seapeak, placed the order for these advanced MGCs. The first carrier’s keel was laid in July 2024 at the HD Hyundai Mipo shipyard in South Korea.
EXMAR confirmed that financing for the six carriers was finalized in October 2024, supporting the development of these innovative dual-fuel vessels.
Dual-Fuel Engine Specifications
Swiss company WinGD will supply the engines. Initially, the first two vessels will use LPG-fueled engines, while the final four vessels will utilize ammonia-fueled engines.
Finnish technology group Wärtsilä is set to deliver the fuel supply and cargo handling systems required for the four ammonia-fueled MGCs, enhancing safety and efficiency in handling ammonia.
Vessel Specifications
Each MGC will measure 190 meters in length, 30.4 meters in width, and 18.8 meters in height, offering substantial capacity for midsize gas transport.
The vessels will be delivered sequentially from Q1 2025, with the final carrier scheduled to arrive by May 2026. This will expand EXMAR’s LPG/ammonia fleet.
