Odfjell Deploys Syroco’s Weather Routing System To Enhance Sustainability

988

Odfjell, a global tanker company, has partnered with climate tech startup Syroco to deploy an advanced weather routing system on two of its vessels, the Bow Olympus and Bow Optima. These vessels are part of Odfjell’s Hudong-class chemical tanker series, flying the Norwegian flag and primarily operating on trans-Pacific routes. Both ships, built in 2019, are equipped with 33 stainless steel tanks and measure 183 meters in length.

Optimising Fuel Efficiency with Syroco’s Digital Tool

As part of its commitment to sustainability, Odfjell will leverage Syroco’s digital weather calculation tool, which uses data-driven insights to optimize routing decisions. Syroco’s system incorporates weather, sea conditions, and specific operational constraints—cargo parameters, arrival times, and safety measures—to propose the most efficient route by creating a digital twin of the vessel. This tool accounts for conventional propulsion systems and considers the energy needs and benefits of wind assistance technology.

Integrating eSAIL Technology for Reduced Emissionseeeeee

In 2025, the Bow Olympus will become the first tanker in the world to use eSAIL technology, provided by bound4blue’s suction sails. The addition of these sails will provide wind-assisted propulsion, helping the vessel reduce its reliance on traditional fuel sources. The Syroco weather routing system will enhance this wind-assisted technology by calculating optimal routes that maximize the sails’ effect on reducing fuel consumption.

Erik Hjortland, VP of Technology at Odfjell, stated:

“Odfjell is committed to operating a sustainable business, and we are continuously seeking improvements to reduce our fleet’s climate footprints. Through data-driven decisions and investment in new technology, we optimize how we operate, to documented results.”

Syroco’s Role in Optimising Sailing and Assessing ROI

Syroco’s platform combines machine learning with naval architecture principles to provide precise calculations of the energy savings delivered by the sails. The software helps measure the return on investment (ROI) from the eSAIL installation by comparing actual savings with projected benefits. It enables Odfjell to track and assess the real-world effectiveness of wind-assistance technology in reducing emissions and improving operational efficiency.

Alex Caizergues, CEO of Syroco, emphasized:

“Syroco supports both conventional propulsion systems and wind assistance devices, helping companies like Odfjell understand the benefits of each solution and make informed operational choices.”

Through this collaboration, Odfjell continues its efforts to reduce its fleet’s carbon footprint, building on its ongoing investment in green technologies. This initiative underscores the company’s broader strategy of integrating innovative, sustainable solutions across its operations, driving the energy transition in maritime transport.
