Epson has announced a partnership with Maersk, one of the world’s largest shipping and logistics companies, to utilize greenhouse gas (GHG) emission-reduced fuels such as biodiesel and green methanol for its inbound ocean transportation to Europe. This collaboration kicks off a three-year programme aimed at increasing the volume of containers transported with these fuels, marking a key step towards Epson’s ambitious goal to become carbon-negative and underground resource-free by 2050.
Partnership Goals and Impact
- The ECO Delivery Ocean product by Maersk allows cargo owners to reduce GHG emissions by up to 82% compared to traditional fossil fuel transportation.
- Epson’s EPSON 25 Renewed initiative includes a decarbonisation pathway, with carbon-free logistics as a central focus. The first year of the program is projected to save 230 tonnes of CO2e emissions.
Maersk’s Sustainability Leadership
Maersk is committed to net-zero GHG emissions by 2040, leading sustainability efforts in the maritime industry. These efforts include the deployment of dual fuel-equipped container ships running on green methanol, electric vehicles for inland logistics, and electric trains. The company’s ECO Delivery product, launched in 2019, supports decarbonisation across ocean, inland, and air transportation.
- Maersk is the first in the industry to have its 2030 and 2040 emission targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative, ensuring alignment with a 1.5°C pathway and net-zero goals.
- The company also holds CDP A-List and Ecovadis Platinum ratings for its sustainability performance.
Collaborative Decarbonisation Efforts
- Kaisa Helena Tikk, Head of Commercial Sustainability at Maersk, emphasized the importance of partnerships in achieving shared environmental goals. The collaboration with Epson is seen as a step towards decarbonising logistics and setting a benchmark for the industry.
Epson’s Commitment and Actions
- Mark Robertson, Chief Supply Chain Officer at Epson Europe, reiterated Epson’s commitment to transformative sustainability and its dedication to reducing carbon footprints in logistics.
- Epson is also optimising container space, fitting 15% more freight per container through enhanced logistics and product design, and is utilizing Shippeo software to track the carbon impact across all transportation stages.
Industry Impact
- The partnership represents a significant move within the electronics sector, where the adoption of GHG emission-reduced fuels is still limited.
- Despite initial cost challenges, Epson and Maersk’s collaboration aims to set a precedent for other electronics companies and inspire more sustainable practices across the shipping and logistics industries.
This collaboration highlights the importance of sustainable logistics, with Epson and Maersk leading the way toward a greener maritime sector.
