Shell recently expanded its LNG (liquefied natural gas) bunkering capabilities with the addition of Energy Stockholm, Europe’s largest inland LNG bunkering vessel. This vessel, boasting a capacity of 8,000 cubic meters, was christened in Rotterdam, Netherlands. With growing demand for LNG as a marine fuel due to its lower emissions, Shell aims to serve several key European ports, supporting the industry’s shift towards more sustainable practices.
Energy Stockholm’s Role in LNG Bunkering Expansion
Energy Stockholm will operate in Zeebrugge, Antwerp, Rotterdam, and Amsterdam. Shell’s customers, including those acquiring new LNG dual-fuel ships, will benefit from this addition. With a large network of 12 bunker barges across 26 global locations, Shell is prepared to meet increasing LNG demands, supporting the maritime sector’s transition to cleaner energy.
Strategic Positioning for Increased Demand
Dexter Belmar, Shell’s General Manager and Head of Global Downstream LNG highlighted that the timing of Energy Stockholm aligns perfectly with the rising demand for LNG bunkering. The addition of this barge enhances Shell’s infrastructure and underscores its commitment to facilitating emission reductions within the maritime industry by providing a reliable LNG supply chain.
Collaborations for Sustainable Maritime Fuel
Shell’s fleet, which now includes Energy Stockholm alongside LNG London, supports a transition to dual-fuel ships that reduce environmental impact. The company’s involvement with LNG bunkering exemplifies the collaborative efforts in the maritime industry, as companies seek alternatives to heavy fuel oils and aim to meet IMO’s emission targets.
