  • HMM introduces its first LNG-powered container ships, “HMM Ocean” and “HMM Sky.”
  • These ships are part of HMM’s commitment to carbon neutrality by 2045, with significant investments in eco-friendly technologies.
  • The fleet expansion includes nine methanol-powered ships, beginning next year.

On November 21, HMM, South Korea’s leading shipping company, celebrated the naming ceremony of its first LNG-powered container ships, “HMM Ocean” and “HMM Sky,” at HJ Heavy Industries in Yeongdo, Busan, reports Maeil Business Newspaper.

LNG and Methanol as Green Alternatives

The introduction of LNG-powered vessels is a direct response to tightening global carbon emission regulations, including the EU’s Carbon Emission Trading System (ETS).

LNG is gaining attention as a low-carbon fuel due to its ability to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 30%, nitrogen oxides by 85%, and sulfur oxides and fine dust by 99%.

HMM has also invested in nine methanol-powered ships, which will be delivered next year, marking another leap towards sustainable shipping.

HMM’s Long-Term Investment in Sustainability

HMM’s decision to invest in eco-friendly ships is part of a larger strategic initiative, with a total investment of 23.5 trillion won outlined in the company’s “2030 Mid- to Long-Term Investment Plan.”

Of this, 14.4 trillion won will be allocated specifically to enhancing the company’s green technologies, including a focus on net-zero emissions and sustainability.

Technological Collaboration and Innovation

The LNG-powered ships, built by HJ Heavy Industries, are a major technological achievement. HMM’s partnership with HJ Heavy Industries underscores South Korea’s growing expertise in producing eco-friendly container ships.

This collaboration further enhances the competitiveness of both the shipyard and the shipping company on a global scale.
