Eni And MSC Partner On Sustainability And Decarbonization Efforts

12

Eni, an integrated energy company with a goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, and MSC Group, a global leader in transport and cruise services, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at collaborating on sustainability and energy transition initiatives. This agreement expands their existing relationship to cover broader geographic areas and new joint initiatives focused on reducing carbon emissions.

Key Areas of Collaboration

  1. Use of Lower-Carbon Fuels
    • The partnership will explore the use of lower-carbon fuels such as LNG, HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil), and bio-LNG biofuels for MSC’s logistics and cruise transport fleets. Eni will also supply lubricants derived from renewable raw materials to further enhance MSC’s decarbonization efforts.
  2. Renewable Energy for MSC Facilities
    • The two companies will assess renewable energy options to help decarbonize MSC’s sites and facilities, supporting their goal of reducing overall carbon emissions.
  3. Integrated Logistics and Transport Solutions
    • Eni and MSC aim to develop synergies across their logistics services, focusing on intermodal transport solutions (sea, rail, and road) for more efficient and sustainable storage and transport of HVO biofuels.
    • This collaboration will include the development of agro-industrial activities for producing raw materials, such as Agri feedstock, which can be used in biorefining processes.
  4. Circular Economy Practices
    • The agreement outlines plans for adopting circular economy practices, including using plastics derived from renewable and recycled materials onboard MSC vessels, as well as enhanced waste management and recycling programs.
  5. Decommissioning and Site Redevelopment
    • Eni and MSC will jointly evaluate solutions for decommissioning offshore platforms and redeveloping decommissioned Eni sites and assets. This area includes research and development initiatives under the Open-es framework, an Eni-led platform promoting sustainability across the value chain.

Comments from Leadership

Claudio Descalzi, CEO of Eni, emphasized the importance of partnerships for tackling the complex challenge of emissions reduction, stating, “This agreement marks the start of our collaboration with MSC in the decarbonization of transport and cruise services… together, we can implement initiatives that contribute significantly to emissions reduction.”

MSC Group President Diego Aponte highlighted the trust between the two companies, saying, “At MSC, we are focused on achieving a successful energy transition… This MoU is a natural evolution of our relationship, and we look forward to expanding our sustainability and decarbonization efforts.”

The MoU between Eni and MSC represents a significant commitment to advancing sustainability within the transport and cruise sectors. By combining Eni’s energy expertise with MSC’s logistics capabilities, the partnership aims to make a substantial impact on reducing emissions, promoting circular economy practices, and creating sustainable solutions for the future of maritime transport.
