A 225-meter-long Canadian lake freighter, ran aground in U.S. waters near Morrisburg, Ontario, on the St. Lawrence River on the afternoon of 23 November, reports Safety4sea.

Vessel grounding

The vessel, carrying Canadian wheat from Port Weller to Quebec, became stranded outside the navigation channel around 12:30 p.m. Fortunately, there were no injuries, no pollution reported, and the ship is not taking on water. Owned by the Algoma Central Corporation, it has been in service since 1967 and boasts a gross tonnage of 18,700.

Efforts are currently underway to develop a salvage plan, though details remain unclear. The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation and the ship’s owner confirmed that the vessel remains stable, and an investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the incident, which did not involve other ships.

While the grounding has not disrupted navigation on the river, it has drawn attention from locals and ship enthusiasts. Many visited Crysler Park Marina, a prime viewing spot on the Canadian side, to catch a glimpse of the freighter.
