ISO has released a new standard, ISO 4891:2024, which outlines the requirements for smart applications on board ships. This standard aims to guide the development and implementation of smart technologies in the maritime industry, according to Safety4sea.
Developed Through Consultations
The document was developed through consultations with ship managers, authorities, and various stakeholders in the maritime industry to address the growing need for digitalization. The standards aim to facilitate the collection, management, and use of data efficiently and securely, supporting the shipping industry’s increasing reliance on digital technologies.
The document outlines requirements for several key aspects of smart applications:
- Documentation and process management – Ensuring proper data collection, management, and workflow optimization through human-machine interfaces and IoT technologies.
- Smart network applications – Methods to implement applications that are open to participants who adhere to the defined requirements.
- Smart logbook application – An extension to ISO 21745, focusing on the security requirements needed to support reliable data recording and use.
Compliance Levels
The document establishes three incremental equipment compliance levels:
- 4891-Compliant Equipment: Fulfills basic requirements outlined in the document.
- 4891.A-Compliant Equipment: Meets additional requirements, including those in Annex A.
- 4891.B-Compliant Equipment: Meets the full set of requirements, including those in Annex A and B.
By creating a modular basis for smart applications, the document enables future growth and interoperability between various digital technologies on board ships, promoting collaboration across stakeholders. This will help to address future challenges while maintaining secure and effective operations.
