Hapag-Lloyd has entered a significant agreement with Goldwind, a Beijing-based global leader in clean energy, for an annual supply of 250,000 tonnes of green methanol. This move is part of Hapag-Lloyd’s Strategy 2030, focusing on sustainable investments and aligning with the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C target.
Key Highlights
- Substantial GHG Emission Reductions
- Green methanol, a blend of bio- and e-methanol, will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 70% compared to conventional fuels.
- The supply will save up to 400,000 tonnes of CO2e emissions annually for Hapag-Lloyd’s fleet operations.
- Strategic Investments in Decarbonization
- Hapag-Lloyd aims to cut absolute fleet emissions by one-third by 2030 compared to 2022.
- The agreement supports Hapag-Lloyd’s vision of achieving net-zero fleet operations by 2045.
- Goldwind’s Role in Green Methanol Production
- Goldwind plans to establish a new green methanol factory adjacent to its existing facility in Hinggan League, China.
- The project is expected to deliver early volumes by 2026, with the full facility operational by late 2027, subject to Board approval.
- Advancing Multi-Fuel Shipping Solutions
- Green methanol is integral to Hapag-Lloyd’s multi-fuel strategy, complementing other investments in LNG and dual-fuel technologies.
- Five 10,100 TEU charter ships, set for methanol dual-fuel retrofitting in 2026, will benefit from this green methanol supply.
