  • Advancing Sustainability: NYK Showcases Green Initiatives at COP29 in Baku

The NYK Group took part in COP29 discussions on international shipping and climate change. COP29 is the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The event took place in Baku, Azerbaijan, between November 11 and 22. National governments and industry organizations hosted side events in which discussions on climate change mitigation took place, reports NYK.

Building Partnerships for a Sustainable Future

During COP29, NYK was actively involved in exchange of ideas and gathering insight with the organizations and people concerned. The Group emphasized the utilization of these interactions for collaborative effort with more partners and in shaping a sustainable future.

Special Seminar on Decarbonization

Event: “Creating Future: Our Approach to Decarbonized Society”
Date: November 19
Organizer: Nikkei Inc.

At this seminar, Kono detailed the NYK Group’s progress on new decarbonization targets announced in its Decarbonization Story in November 2023. He highlighted three key actions:

  1. Completion of an ammonia-fueled tugboat
  2. Promotion of biofuel use
  3. Improvements in energy efficiency

Panel Discussion on the 1.5°C Target

Event: “Path to 1.5°C Target: Japanese Non-State Actors Taking on Challenge of Decarbonization”
Date: November 21
Organizer: Japan Climate Initiative (JCI)

It addressed talks of companies discussing ways through which the 1.5°C target could be attained. Being an international shipping firm, NYK recognized that to realize this, the global regime would require more harmonized and unified regulations among stakeholders.

Second, Kono stated the measures necessary to surpass the level of national frameworks by way of implementing efficient climate regulations on shipping.

Decarbonizing Shipping with Technology

At the Japan Pavilion, Arc Edge Space Inc. showcased a geospatial data platform that monitors environmental changes and risks by integrating data from satellites and ground sensors. NYK was involved in the development of satellite-based greenhouse gas (GHG) monitoring technology and demonstrated the results of a remote sensing experiment.

This experiment compared the co-firing ratio of ammonia and fuel oil and used it to assess the GHG emissions level in the condition emulating that of an ammonia-fueled ship. Conducted by NYK and partners, this study gave helpful insights in managing emissions.
Satellite Monitoring: Creating Transparency

In the era of reducing Scope 3 GHG emissions, emissions data is becoming a critical asset for stakeholders. NYK is pushing forward satellite-based monitoring to ensure third-party transparency in cargo transport emissions. This initiative aligns with the Group’s broader strategy of enhancing accountability and driving climate action in the shipping industry.

A Commitment to Climate Leadership

Through its active participation in COP29, the NYK Group reaffirmed its commitment to addressing climate change and advancing decarbonization in international shipping. In collaboration with cutting-edge technology, NYK continues to shape a sustainable and transparent future for the industry.
