- The total carbon footprint for 2022, certified by DNV, stands at 495,356 tCO₂eq.
- This includes 349,399 tCO₂eq from previously accounted activities and an additional 145,957 tCO₂eq from newly incorporated sources like industrial operations, port works, and ship waste.
The Port of Barcelona has become the first in the Mediterranean, and among the global pioneers, to adopt the ISO 14064 standard for calculating its carbon footprint across all port activities, as reported by IAA Portnews.
ISO 14064 Certification
The certification ensures that the carbon footprint calculation adheres to international standards, guaranteeing data reliability and enabling comparability in future assessments.
Advanced Emissions Tracking
Since 2012, the Port has calculated emissions under the Government of Catalonia’s voluntary agreements program. The latest approach represents a significant step forward by integrating all activities into the emissions inventory as direct emissions, centralizing their role in climate accountability.
This initiative places the Port of Barcelona at the forefront of sustainable port management and sets a model for other global ports to follow.
