  • NYK Line has obtained Approval in Principle (AiP) from ClassNK for a cutting-edge cable-laying vessel design.
  • The vessel is part of a solution to enable a long-distance subsea DC transmission network crucial for renewable energy development in Japan.
  • This initiative is part of a larger collaborative project involving Sumitomo Electric Industries, Furukawa Electric Co., and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, supported by NEDO.
  • NYK’s innovation aligns with the goal of achieving a decarbonized society through enhanced power transmission systems.

NYK Line, as reported on its official platform, has achieved a significant milestone by obtaining Approval in Principle (AiP) from ClassNK for the design of a next-generation cable-laying vessel. This vessel is designed to support the construction of a long-distance subsea direct current (DC) transmission network, a critical infrastructure for Japan’s renewable energy ambitions.

Meeting Japan’s Renewable Energy Challenges

Japan faces the challenge of transmitting electricity from wind-power generation hubs, such as Hokkaido, to major demand centers. A subsea DC transmission network, constructed with the aid of specialized cable-laying vessels, offers a practical solution to this issue, ensuring the efficient transfer of renewable energy across regions.

Collaborative Innovation for DC Transmission

In partnership with Sumitomo Electric Industries, Furukawa Electric Co., and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, NYK participates in the RIGHT Project, a research initiative funded by Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO). This project focuses on advancing technologies for high-voltage direct current (HVDC) systems, including the design of modern cable-laying vessels.

Technological Advancements in Cable-Laying Vessels

NYK, in collaboration with Sumitomo Electric, has developed groundbreaking technology for cable-laying vessels to facilitate Japan’s subsea transmission network. The AiP from ClassNK, secured with Furukawa Electric’s support, demonstrates the feasibility and compliance of this innovative design with industry standards.

Commitment to a Decarbonized Future

NYK is committed to enabling a sustainable energy transition by enhancing infrastructure for renewable energy. The optimization of cable-laying vessel design represents a vital step in building resilient systems that contribute to a decarbonized society.
