Flagships H2020 Project-developed ‘Zulu 06’ inland waterway barge begins operation. The ‘Zulu 06’ is designed to ensure zero-emission transport and, in this context, it’s a good step towards more sustainable waterborne logistics, reports Clean Shipping International.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell Power

With hydrogen fuel cells, ‘Zulu 06’ can continue working without emissions for seven days. This state-of-the-art technology really shows how clean energy based on hydrogen might be viable for commercial maritime applications.

About the FLAGSHIPS Project

FLAGSHIPS H2020 Project: The deployment of two hydrogen fuel cell-powered vessels into commercial operation will take zero-emission waterborne transport to new heights. It will prove the feasibility and readiness of hydrogen technology in maritime transport, coordinated by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland.

Role of LMG Marin

As part of the project consortium, LMG Marin played a crucial role in the design and safety aspects of the ‘Zulu 06’:

  1. Designed the hydrogen fuel-cell room and hydrogen containment area.
  2. Conducted a thorough risk analysis for operational safety.
  3. Supported the owner during the approbation process to ensure compliance with regulations.

Funding and Support

The FLAGSHIPS project is funded by the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen 2 Joint Undertaking, which is supported by The European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme and The Hydrogen Europe, a leading European industry group advancing hydrogen technologies.
