As reported by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd., the event marked a significant milestone for the company as they continue to strengthen their footprint in the cruise industry. The official naming ceremony was held at the Tokyo International Cruise Terminal to celebrate MITSUI OCEAN FUJI’s entry into service.

Official Naming Ceremony Highlights

The naming ceremony took place onboard MITSUI OCEAN FUJI on the “Ocean Stage,” with speeches from MOL Cruises President Tsunemichi Mukai and Captain Kim Karlsson, the first captain of the new vessel. Senko Ikenobo, the first woman to ascend as headmaster of the historic Ikenobo school of flower arrangement (established over 560 years ago), performed the official naming. She expressed hopes for safe voyages, stating: “I hope this cruise ship will sail safely around beautiful Japan and the world for many years to come.”

The event also featured the traditional sake-breaking ceremony and a beautiful ikebana arrangement contributed by Ikenobo Senshu of the Ikenobo Youth Club. This symbolic floral art incorporated natural elements, conveying beauty, cultural tradition, and aspirations for strong international relationships and safe passages across various ports of call.

The BLUE ACTION 2035 strategic plan by MOL emphasizes reforms to ensure long-term profitability even during market volatility. Within this framework, the cruise business is being prioritized as a stable, non-shipping profit sector that will buffer the company during economic downturns. MOL Cruises is actively pursuing the addition of new cruise ships, including MITSUI OCEAN FUJI, as part of their vision to increase corporate value and expand their strategic market position.

The naming ceremony, which saw the attendance of MOL President & CEO Takeshi Hashimoto and other key officials, concluded with heartfelt wishes for Bon Voyage” to MITSUI OCEAN FUJI.
