Methane Emissions from Coal Cargoes from the East Coast of the USA

  • Accurate cargo declarations are required under the IMSBC Code.
  • Monitor and address excessive methane concentrations.
  • Ensure crew and vessel safety through prompt action.

The Club identified several incidents where coal cargoes from the East Coast of the USA were emitting seriously high levels of methane. In some cases, natural ventilation in the ship’s holds was found to be insufficient for the reduction of these excessive methane concentrations, reports UK P&I Club.

Importance of Accurate Cargo Declarations

Shippers are required to make accurate cargo declarations. These declarations must include information regarding the potential methane emissions as required by the IMSBC Code. Failure to comply with these requirements may lead to hazardous situations aboard vessels, which might put both the crew and the vessel at risk.

Vigilance and Monitoring

Shipping companies are encouraged to remain vigilant and constantly monitor the levels of methane in coal cargoes. In case excessive methane buildup is found, corrective measures should be taken immediately to ensure the safety of the crew and the vessel.

Seeking Help

Members who have loaded coal cargoes from the East Coast of the USA and have apprehensions about methane emissions are requested to contact the Club immediately for advice and assistance.
