According to Chamber of Marine Commerce, the 2024 marine shipping season approaches its conclusion, year-over-year tonnage traffic on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway has remained consistent with 2023, according to a recent release from the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation and the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation. This consistency underscores the marine mode’s resilience in the face of unique and unpredictable challenges.
Cargo Traffic Highlights
By the end of November, total cargo shipments for the navigation season amounted to 32.3 million metric tons. While variations in specific commodities were observed, notable increases include:
- Over 9.7 million metric tons (mt) of Canadian and U.S. grain, marking a 12.1% year-over-year increase.
- Potash traffic exceeding 1.5 million mt, reflecting an 8.35% rise from 2023.
- Liquid bulk shipments reaching over 3.5 million mt, up by 13.75%.
- General cargo traffic surpassing 2.8 million mt, a 14.37% growth compared to the previous year.
