Revival of a Shipbuilding Giant

According to Marine Link, the former Chinese shipbuilding powerhouse, Rongsheng Heavy Industries, has been reborn as Jiangsu New Rongsheng Heavy Industry. Rongsheng, once China’s largest private shipbuilder with expansive facilities including four large docks and eight outfitting quays, delivered its last vessel in 2017 before filing for bankruptcy.

Local media reports now confirm the shipyard’s resurgence, with new orders secured for eight dual-fuel LNG container ships of 11,500 TEU capacity for MSC and two 210,000 dwt bulk carriers for Capital Maritime. The total value of these contracts exceeds $1.4 billion, signaling a robust return to the global shipbuilding stage.

China’s Shipbuilding Dominance

China has reaffirmed its global leadership in green shipbuilding. Statistics from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology highlight that the nation captured over 70% of global orders for eco-friendly vessels in the first three quarters of 2024.

Between January and September, Chinese shipyards recorded a remarkable 51.9% year-on-year growth in new orders, reaching 87.11 million dwt and accounting for 74.7% of the global total. Shipbuilding output also rose significantly, up 18.2% year-on-year to 36.34 million dwt, representing 55.1% of the global output.

Future Prospects

Jiangsu New Rongsheng’s return, coupled with China’s continued dominance in the green shipbuilding sector, underscores the country’s pivotal role in shaping the future of sustainable maritime technology. With these developments, Chinese shipyards are poised to maintain their competitive edge on the global stage.
