Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, has officially inaugurated CMA Terminals Khalifa Port, reports Business Wire.
The ceremony was attended by Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman and CEO of the CMA CGM Group. The AED 3.1 billion (US$ 845m) facility is managed by a joint venture between CMA CGM’s subsidiary CMA Terminals (70%) and AD Ports (30%).
The new terminal marks the completion of Phase 1 of the project, featuring an initial quay wall 800m in length, 18.5m deep, equipped with eight STS cranes. With a total capacity of 1.8m TEU, the addition increases Khalifa Port’s annual container capacity by 23%, raising it to nearly 10m TEU.

CMA Terminals Khalifa Port features ZPMC STS cranes and 20 ERTGs from Konecranes. The ERTGs have driver cabins and are powered by a conductor rail, which was supplied by Vahle. The conductor rail includes Vahle’s failsafe SMGX data communication system and is designed to support “partial automation” of the equipment in the future. In line with the UAE’s sustainability goals, the terminal features shore power for vessels to reduce emissions, solar panels contributing to the energy mix, and the region’s first net-zero carbon administration building powered by renewable energy sources.
The design also incorporates circular economy principles, focusing on recycling construction materials and minimising operational waste. The facility is rail-ready, further boosting Khalifa Port’s role as a strategic gateway for regional trade.
The opening of the CMA CGM facility cements Khalifa Port’s position as one of the region’s premier port trade hubs. Khalifa Port now spans 6.3km², with 41 quay cranes, 159 yard cranes, 11.7km of quay wall, and 3.8km of breakwater.
CMA Terminals Khalifa Port provides the CMA CGM Group with a modern, sustainably designed hub to facilitate growing trade between Asia, Africa, Europe, the Mediterranean, the Middle East, and the Indian subcontinent. This development aligns with CMA CGM’s ambition to achieve Net Zero Carbon by 2050.
