China has inaugurated its first smart microgrid at the Port of Lianyungang, Jiangsu Province, as part of its zero-carbon port plan. This innovative system integrates clean energy technologies to minimize carbon emissions and offers a scalable blueprint for other ports, reports The State Council of the People’s Republic of China.

Smart Microgrid: Pioneering Zero-Carbon Ports

The Port of Lianyungang in Jiangsu Province now operates a smart microgrid system in China, the first of its kind.

This innovative setup includes photovoltaic power generation, energy storage, and electric vehicles.

It ensures near-zero carbon emissions during ship berthing, cargo handling, and transport operations.

Collaboration and Innovation

Developed by State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power Co., the microgrid exemplifies a “multi-energy complementary” system with high efficiency.

It connects various power generation and consumption equipment, contributing over 6 million kWh of clean energy annually.

Environmental and Cost Benefits

The system delivers significant environmental and financial benefits.

It includes annual savings of 3 million yuan ($417,270), a reduction of 21,000 tonnes of coal consumption, and a reduction of 56,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions.

National Implications

This project aligns with China’s zero-carbon pilot initiative launched in June 2024.

Its success highlights its potential as a replicable and scalable model for future zero-carbon port projects nationwide.
