Port Of Antwerp-Bruges To Install Shore Power And Modernize Cruise Ship Infrastructure

15

The Port of Antwerp-Bruges has announced plans to modernize its infrastructure, focusing on shore power facilities to reduce emissions and noise pollution, especially for cruise ships at the Swedish Quay in Zeebrugge. This initiative is part of the port’s broader strategy to become more eco-friendly while enhancing passenger experience and connectivity.

Key Developments

  1. Shore Power for Cruise Ships:
    • The first shore power installation for cruise ships in Zeebrugge will allow vessels to connect to green electricity from the high-voltage grid at the quay.
    • This will result in a 98% reduction in CO2 emissions and a 95% reduction in particulate matter, as ships will no longer need to run their diesel generators while docked.
    • The shore power installation is scheduled for completion by autumn 2025.
  2. Future Plans:
    • By 2030, the port aims to install shore power for two cruise ships, with the first system expected to be operational in 2027, three years before the European Union’s mandated deadline.
  3. Infrastructure Investments:
    • The Port Authority will also invest in new infrastructure, including a new terminal and redevelopment of the quay area, which will enhance passenger experience by providing direct access from the ship to the terminal, eliminating the need for buses.
    • Part of the quay will be converted into green spaces, and the old railway line will be repurposed for walking and cycling paths.
  4. Funding and Subsidies:
    • The Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF) is providing a €3.2 million subsidy for the shore power supply.
    • Additional funding opportunities are being explored for the terminal modernization project.

This initiative is a step towards reducing the port’s environmental impact while improving its infrastructure to meet future sustainability and passenger connectivity goals.
