South Carolina Ports (SC Ports) is bolstering its intermodal connections through the ongoing expansion of Inland Port Greer and the development of the Navy Base Intermodal Facility in North Charleston. These investments aim to enhance cargo and rail capabilities to support regional and national growth.
Inland Port Greer Expansion
SC Ports is expanding Inland Port Greer to improve rail and cargo capabilities, supporting customers in South Carolina’s Upstate region and beyond. The upgrades provide shippers with direct rail access to the Port of Charleston, the 8th largest container port in the U.S.
The expansion includes:
- Over 9,000 feet of new rail to accommodate longer trains and increased cargo volumes.
- Doubling of container yard capacity to handle up to 300,000 rail lifts annually.
- Commissioning of two new rubber-tired hybrid gantry cranes to enhance container handling.
- Construction of new operations and maintenance buildings and expansion of the chassis yard, set for completion by late spring.
Strategically located along Interstate 85 between Charlotte and Atlanta, Inland Port Greer offers Norfolk Southern’s daily rail service to Charleston, providing businesses with efficient cargo transport and reduced emissions.
Navy Base Intermodal Facility
SC Ports is investing $400 million in state funding to expand rail capabilities at the Port of Charleston with the construction of the Navy Base Intermodal Facility. Situated on a 118-acre site near Leatherman Terminal, this facility will streamline cargo movement between the Port of Charleston, inland ports, and key markets like Atlanta, Memphis, Nashville, and Louisville.
This infrastructure investment aligns with SC Ports’ strategy to provide faster and more reliable cargo movement, boosting the Southeast’s economic growth.
November Cargo Volumes
SC Ports experienced a 5% year-over-year increase in containerized cargo moving through the Port of Charleston in November. Key statistics include:
- 116,273 pier containers and 211,443 TEUs handled during the month.
- Fiscal-year-to-date figures include 583,959 pier containers and 1.06 million TEUs, marking a 1% increase over last year.
- Inland Ports Greer and Dillon managed 17,735 combined rail moves in November.
- 16,695 vehicles were processed at SC Ports facilities last month.
SC Ports President and CEO Barbara Melvin emphasized the importance of these investments, stating, “We are making strategic investments in rail-supported infrastructure to support [our customers’] growth in the Southeast.”
