Navigating 2024 Emission Compliance: Deadlines and Actions for Shipping Companies

14

  • Strict compliance with EU, UK, and IMO emission monitoring and verification regulations is critical for 2024.
  • Deadlines span from December 2024 to June 2025, requiring timely data submissions to avoid penalties.
  • Separate processes exist for EU MRV, UK MRV, EU ETS, and IMO DCS & CII, with overlapping but distinct requirements.

Shipping companies must navigate a series of regulatory deadlines for emissions reporting and verification in 2024. With requirements spanning multiple jurisdictions, including the EU, UK, and IMO, meeting these obligations demands precise planning to avoid penalties and ensure compliance with stringent emission standards, reports LR.

EU MRV/UK MRV Deadlines and Actions

First Stage: Submit vessel and voyage data for the year by 31 December 2024.

Second Stage: Emissions data for each ship is due by 15 January 2025, with verification and uploading to THETIS-MRV or the UK platform required by 31 March 2025.

UK Note: Data for UK MRV will remain on the Emissions Verifier platform until a separate UK system is established.

EU ETS Compliance

31 January 2025: Aggregated company-level emissions data must be submitted to the Emissions Verifier portal.

1 April 2025: Verified emissions data must be uploaded to the Union Registry via the Maritime Operator Holding Account (MOHA). Delayed uploads could result in account blocks.

IMO DCS & CII Requirements

31 March 2025: Annual emissions data must be submitted for verification.

31 May 2025: LR issues the Statement of Compliance (SOC).

30 June 2025: Verified data must be submitted to IMO’s GISIS platform.

Key Risks of Non-Compliance

Missing the 15 January 2025 submission deadline jeopardizes all subsequent deadlines.

Administrative blocks on accounts, penalties, and disruptions in operations may result from delays.
