Theodore Too, the life-sized replica of Theodore Tugboat, has partially sunk at the Ontario Shipyard in Port Weller, its owner confirmed. The 20-metre vessel, which relocated from Halifax Harbour to the Port of Hamilton in June 2021, began taking on water Tuesday night, reports Global News.
Vessel Condition and Recovery Plans
Kayla Graham, executive assistant at Breakwater, described the vessel as partially submerged in shallow water, with the rest of it resting in the mud near a dock. Photos shared with Global News show the tugboat’s iconic red ball cap, bulbous nose, and friendly smile still visible above water.
McKeil reassured the public that a professional team is actively working on a safe refloat plan. “People across the country hold this little tugboat dear, and we will do everything possible to keep everyone informed of our progress,” he said. “Rest assured, measures have been taken to mitigate any potential environmental impact.”
Theodore Too’s Legacy
Built-in 2000 in Dayspring, Nova Scotia, Theodore Too is a life-size replica of the title character from the CBC children’s television series Theodore Tugboat, which aired from 1993 to 2001. The tugboat became an iconic symbol, hosting children’s tours of Halifax Harbour during summers and promoting Nova Scotian tourism through its travels across the Great Lakes and U.S. seaboard.
Since moving to Ontario, Theodore Too has remained a sensation, visiting more than 20 ports along the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario. Its mission has expanded to raising awareness about the marine industry, as well as the conservation, restoration, and preservation of water resources.
Public Reaction and Support
The partial sinking has drawn reactions from across the country. Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston shared his thoughts on Facebook, saying, “It’s sad to see our old friend in such a damaged state. I’m happy to read the owner is committed to repairing Theodore and a safe and successful refloat. Stay strong, Theodore!”
The tugboat’s official Instagram account also addressed the incident, referring to the sinking as a “mishap.”
“I am resting safely on my belly in the mud and my family in Ontario has assembled a team of experts to carefully right and refloat me. They are working super hard to have me ship shape in time for the holidays,” the post said.
It continued with a heartfelt message for fans: “At this time of year, when so many of my friends across the country are struggling, I want you to know how much I love you all and I wish you a heartfelt happy, healthy and toot-ally magical holiday. Toot Toot!”
A Commitment to Restoration
Despite the setback, Theodore Too’s owners and fans remain hopeful for the vessel’s recovery. With a dedicated team addressing the issue, there is optimism that the iconic tugboat will be refloated and repaired in time to continue its mission of delighting fans and promoting marine awareness.
