- Golar LNG’s Fuji LNG to Be Transformed into a State-of-the-Art FLNG Vessel.
- FLNG Technology Revolutionizes Offshore LNG Production.
- Kongsberg to Provide Advanced Systems for FLNG Conversion.
Kongsberg Maritime has been awarded a major contract of more than USD 25 million for the supply of an integrated package of electrical, control, safety, and propulsion systems for the Golar Mk2 Floating Liquified Natural Gas (FLNG) project. The major rebuild will convert Golar’s LNG tanker, Fuji LNG, into an FLNG vessel by lengthening it by nearly 100 meters, reports Kongsberg.
FLNG: Revolutionizing LNG Production
FLNG technology is a groundbreaking innovation in the LNG industry. It offers a floating liquefaction plant that is best suited for remote and offshore locations, eliminating the need for permanent infrastructure such as pipelines and onshore facilities. The mobility and reusability of FLNG units allow redeployment to other fields after gas reserves are depleted, making them an economically viable solution for long-term operations.
Kongsberg’s Role in the Conversion Project
Kongsberg Maritime’s equipment package for the Mk2 FLNG project includes two UUC305 azimuth thrusters and electrical systems integrated with an Integrated Control and Safety System (ICSS). The thrusters will possess a Heading Control system: Kongsberg’s leading DP expertise, thus creating station-keeping capability by not requiring the complete installed DP systems.
Advanced safety and control systems
Kongsberg provides an integrated ICSS, encompassing control of the process plant, energy management, power distribution, cargo handling, ballast control, and auxiliary systems. Safety features include the following:
- Emergency Shutdown System (ESD)
- Fire and Gas Detection System (F&G)
- Process Shutdown System (PSD)
These systems ensure the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of the FLNG vessel.
Trusted Partnership with Golar LNG
Morten Skjong, Project Manager for Golar LNG’s MK II FLNG, expressed confidence in Kongsberg’s ability to deliver high-quality solutions for the project.
“Kongsberg Maritime has been a trusted supplier to Golar LNG’s floating portfolio for decades, and we are pleased to have them as a key provider for our next-generation floating LNG production unit, the MK II FLNG,” said Skjong. “As an FLNG operator that takes on 20+ year contracts, Golar is reliant on quality solutions not only for the project execution phase but products and services such as Kongsberg’s that will serve us reliably during the full term of the operations contract.”
Strong Collaboration Across Stakeholders
Vegard Skår, Vice President of sales, Offshore Production Units at Kongsberg Maritime, highlighted the importance of collaboration in the success of the project:
“We have worked closely with Golar from the early design phase of this complex project, securing a large scope of supply for their Mk2 vessel. The systems to be delivered are all critical components in the safe and reliable operation of an FLNG vessel. There has been excellent collaboration with CIMC Raffles and Black & Veatch during the design phase, and we look forward to continuing this progressive approach to ensure full integration of many systems during this complex conversion project.”
Looking Ahead
Lisa Edvardsen Haugan, President of Kongsberg Maritime, praised Golar LNG’s innovative approach: “Golar is a long-standing player in the LNG market and a pioneer with their conversion concepts for the Fuji LNG tanker to FLNG. KM is proud to continue our support and cooperation on this innovative conversion project, to support the growing global demand for LNG.”
With this partnership, Kongsberg Maritime is set to play a critical role in enabling the successful conversion of Fuji LNG into a state-of-the-art FLNG vessel, demonstrating the company’s commitment to innovation and excellence in the LNG sector.
