As the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) concludes its Golden Jubilee year in 2024, the organization has achieved remarkable milestones in sustainability, innovation, and maritime safety, further solidifying its position as a leader in the global maritime sector.

Key Achievements in 2024

Sustainability and Decarbonisation

  • Electric Ferry Classification: IRS successfully classed a next-generation electric ferry, promoting cleaner maritime transport.
  • Green Technology Projects: Collaborations with industry leaders advanced decarbonisation efforts, such as the development of the Swayat project, India’s first autonomous vessel.
  • Autonomous Navigation System: In partnership with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders, IRS demonstrated an innovative system with dual navigation capabilities.

Maritime Safety and Innovation

  • Ship Trajectory Prediction Tool: Developed with IIT Bombay, this tool aims to enhance navigational safety.
  • Underwater Radiated Noise Prediction: IRS advanced its technical expertise in predicting and managing underwater noise.

Defence and Paramilitary Contributions

  • Naval and Defence Projects: Key deliveries in 2024 included:
    • Four Shallow-Water Anti-Submarine Warfare Corvettes.
    • Two Pollution Control Vessels.
    • A Survey Vessel (Large).
    • Six New Generation Missile Vessels and five Fleet Support Ships.
    • 14 Fast Patrol Vessels and other specialized crafts.
  • Third-Party Inspection: IRS became the first classification society in India to conduct inspections for a submarine undergoing refit at Hindustan Shipyard.

Digital Transformation

  • Partnered with Dassault Systèmes to implement the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, with trials expected to conclude by Q2 2025, enabling enhanced operational efficiency.

Strategic Partnerships

  • Autonomous and Green Energy Vessels: Collaborations with SeaTech (Singapore) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers advanced innovative vessel designs.
  • Ocean Research: Agreements with the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research focused on specialized vessel design.
  • Hydrodynamic Studies: Partnership with Marin (Netherlands) enabled cutting-edge model testing for new projects.

Reviving India’s Maritime Heritage

IRS played a crucial role in the Stitched Ship Project, a unique initiative combining ancient shipbuilding techniques with modern standards. This project celebrates India’s rich maritime legacy.

Leadership and Vision

  • New Leadership:
    • Mr. P.K. Mishra took over as Managing Director.
    • Mr. T.K. Sahu became Joint Managing Director, signaling a renewed drive toward growth and innovation.
