The ReCAAP Information Sharing Centre reported three incidents of armed robbery against ships in Asia between December 30, 2024, and January 6, 2025. These incidents included two serious attacks (Category 4) and one attempted robbery, reports Safety4sea.
Area Of Concern
The ReCAAP ISC (Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia) continues to advise heightened vigilance for ships transiting areas like the Straits of Malacca and Singapore.
Regarding a recent case, the threat level for crew abduction has been downgraded from ‘Moderate’ to ‘Moderate Low’. This follows successful counter-terrorism operations by the Philippine government, which have significantly weakened the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG).
However, the ReCAAP ISC emphasizes that while the risk of abduction has decreased, the possibility of minor incidents, such as minor damage to the vessel and crew, still exists.
Recommendations Given
The ReCAAP ISC advises ship masters and crews to report all incidents of piracy and armed robbery to the nearest coastal state and their flag state. They should utilize the contact information provided in the ReCAAP ISC poster for reporting such incidents.
Furthermore, the ReCAAP ISC urges increased vigilance and the implementation of appropriate preventive measures as outlined in the Regional Guide 2 to Counter Piracy and Armed Robbery Against Ships in Asia.
