Recently, seafarers can officially use electronic certificates for international voyages, a significant advancement aimed at simplifying maritime operations globally. This change, described as a New Year’s gift to the maritime industry, aligns with updates to the STCW Convention.
Key Features of the Update
- Electronic and Physical Certificates Recognized Equally:
The STCW Convention now defines the original certificate format as either a physical card or a digital certificate, ensuring equal recognition for both. - Digital Access for Certificates:
- Seafarers can access their certificates via the “NMA Seafarer” mobile app or the “My Page for Seafarers” platform.
- These digital certificates will be valid during inspections alongside physical formats.
Benefits for Seafarers and Shipping Companies
- Simplified Documentation:
“The documentation process will become easier and more accessible for crew members worldwide,” says Irene Mortveit Ellingsen, product owner for APS at the Norwegian Maritime Authority. - Greater Flexibility:
The inclusion of electronic certificates enhances the ability to manage, present, and validate credentials efficiently during inspections and other processes.
Impact on Maritime Operations
This digital transformation is expected to:
- Streamline daily operations for both seafarers and shipping companies.
- Enhance convenience and security for document management.
- Foster global recognition of digitalisation efforts in the maritime sector.
Ellingsen concludes, “This update provides greater flexibility and marks a significant step toward a more digitalised, efficient future for the maritime industry.”
