Blue Water And Royal Wagenborg Partner For Greensand Future CCS Project

28

Blue Water Shipping has joined forces with Dutch shipowner Royal Wagenborg to support the groundbreaking Greensand Future Project led by INEOS. This initiative aims to establish the first operational CO2 storage facility in the European Union, located in the Danish North Sea. The project will enable large-scale marine transport and permanent storage of liquid CO2, marking a significant step in the advancement of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) in Europe.

Specialised Vessel for CO2 Transport

To transport liquid CO2 from Esbjerg to the Greensand Future storage site at the Nini field, a purpose-modified CO2 carrier with advanced intake and station-keeping capabilities is being developed.

  • Design Inspiration: The vessel design is based on Wagenborg’s Easymax design, known for its innovation and efficiency.
  • Safety and Efficiency: The new carrier will adhere to the highest safety and operational standards, ensuring reliable transport of liquid CO2 for permanent storage.

Pioneering Marine Transport Solution

  • Blue Water’s Role:
Blue Water identified Royal Wagenborg to design and build the CO2 carrier, leveraging its maritime expertise and commitment to sustainable solutions.
  • Shipyard: The vessel will be constructed at Royal Niestern Sander, Wagenborg’s own shipyard in the Netherlands, and is expected to be operational by the end of 2025.

Greensand Future Project Milestones

  • Initial Storage Capacity: The project will store 400,000 tonnes of CO2 annually during its initial phase.
  • Future Capacity: Storage capability is projected to expand up to 8 million tonnes per year.

Leadership Comments

  • Søren Gammelgaard Nielsen, Head of Projects at Blue Water, remarked:
“This solution demonstrates how local expertise contributes to global sustainability efforts. It’s a pioneering solution for a pioneering project.”
  • Edwin de Vries, Director Wagenborg Offshore, stated:
“We are grateful to Blue Water for enabling this partnership. The vessel will play a key role in advancing CCS marine transport in Europe.”

Significance

This collaboration highlights a “Together We Create Solutions” approach, combining innovative engineering with partnership-driven efforts to tackle global climate challenges. By pioneering marine CCS transport, the Greensand Future project sets a benchmark for sustainable practices in the maritime and energy sectors, paving the way for a low-carbon future in Europe.
