Wärtsilä’s Technology group said it had agreed to provide its innovative EnergoFlow solution and Fixed Pitch Propellers (FPP) for three Pure Car/Truck Carrier vessels owned by the prominent international RoRo cargo operator, Sallaum Lines. This upgrade will immensely enhance the propulsion efficiency of the vessels, thereby diminishing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Wärtsilä announced this order during Q4 2024, reports Wärtsilä.
Supporting the 2050 Net-Zero Goals
The shipping industry is under increasing pressure to meet the 2050 net-zero goals, which requires transformational changes in operations. Decarbonisation efforts are now targeted at existing fleets, including older vessels such as these 15-year-old PCTCs. Recognizing this imperative, Sallaum Lines teamed up with Wärtsilä to implement sustainable solutions tailored to their fleet.
Wärtsilä’s Decarbonisation Programme was used for a thorough analysis and modelling to find the optimal solutions for three vessels. A customized approach matches Sallaum Lines’ strategy of minimizing environmental impact.
Sallaum Lines’ Commitment to Sustainability
“Wärtsilä’s Decarbonisation Programme has greatly helped us as we strive to minimise the environmental impact of our operations. By adding the Wärtsilä innovations to these three vessels, we are taking an important step forward towards meeting our sustainability goals,” says Puneet Arora, Head of Technical – Sallaum Lines.
Wärtsilä Advanced Propulsion Solutions
Wärtsilä FPPs are designed for best-in-class performance and efficiency with low noise and vibration levels. On the other hand, the EnergoFlow pre-swirl stator optimises the inflow to the propeller, hence increasing propulsion efficiency and reducing emissions in all operating conditions.
These solutions form part of Wärtsilä’s portfolio directed at improving the performance of the existing fleet market and are aligned with decarbonisation objectives.
Upgraded Vessels
The three vessels to be upgraded are the ‘Silver Queen,’ ‘Silver Moon,’ and ‘Silver Sky.’ Each of the 183-metre-long PCTCs has a capacity to carry 4,900 cars. These solutions will reduce emissions and cut operating costs, reinforcing Sallaum Lines’ commitment to environmental responsibility.
Industry Recognition for Proactive Decarbonisation
“Our Decarbonisation Programme is designed to support owners and operators invest in the most appropriate solutions for their particular vessels,” explains Rajan Khanna, Head of Sales for Middle East – Wärtsilä Marine. “With increasing pressure within the industry to decarbonise, we applaud Sallaum Lines for taking action to proactively implement solutions which will help them to maximise operational efficiency and minimise the environmental impact of their vessels.”
Wärtsilä’s Middle East Support Network
The strength of the presence of the Finnish company, Wärtsilä, is underpinned by the dedication to the customer in the Middle East as seen in its team size of more than 300 people and having a workshop within the United Arab Emirates. In that regard, this ensures ongoing support for sustainability and operational objectives among regional operators, such as Sallaum Lines.
