Baku Shipyard is building a Damen Cutter Suction Dredger (CSD) 650, for which the design and materials package is being supplied by Damen Shipyards Group. The dredger is scheduled to be completed later this year and will be operated by the Port of Baku, a strategic transport hub on the western shore of the Caspian Sea, reports Damen.

First Cutter Suction Dredger Built in Azerbaijan

This is a significant milestone for Baku Shipyard, which is building its first cutter suction dredger in Azerbaijan. All the steelwork is being carried out by the yard according to Damen’s design. Damen has provided a full materials package, which includes major items like the dredge pump and operating cabin. The materials have been delivered via eleven trailers and two 40-foot containers. These will form the main skeleton of the dredger’s assembly.

Technical Skills of Engineer Soltan Kazimov

CSD 650 is a dredger, with its operation possible at dredging depths of between -3m and -18m. With cutter power at 700 kW, a dredge pump at 1,825 kW, and a swing width of 63m, the dredger guarantees effective dredging operations. The dredger was named Engineer Soltan Kazimov and was built for maintenance dredging in the Port of Baku.

Excellence in Construction and Partnership

Mr Alexander Shamray, Damen Sales Manager, expressed his satisfaction with the collaboration, stating: “We are very happy to work together with Baku Shipyard. The cooperation with the yard team is excellent, and that is reflected in the high quality of the dredger. The professional team has taken up the project brilliantly, and the quality of the output is impressive. We are delighted that the dredger is progressing the way it is, especially considering that it is the first that the yard has built. We are looking forward to the commissioning of the dredger and delivery to the Port of Baku.”

Maintenance Dredging to Counter Port Challenges

The dredger will be mainly used to maintain access to the port, which is crucial because the water level in the Caspian Sea has significantly decreased in the last five years. The new port expansion also requires dredging to handle the increasing volume of port traffic and to keep berths operational.

Strategic Significance of the Port of Baku

It is the strategic location that has brought Port of Baku to emerge as a very vital regional logistics hub. The east-west axis links China to the Black Sea and the Mediterranean, while its north-south corridor extends towards the Persian Gulf. These links have made it an important node in international transport networks.
