The combined capacity of major container shipping lines increased by 10.3% in 2024, reports Alphaliner on LinkedIn.

Expanded Fleet

MSC significantly expanded its fleet in 2024, adding 692,000 TEU, representing an above-average growth rate of 12.3%. This growth was driven by the delivery of 50 newbuilds, including 26 neo-panamax vessels.

Maersk expanded its fleet by 7.3% in 2024, receiving 23 newbuilds, including the first seven methanol-powered “Equinox”-class ships. This marks a return to fleet growth for Maersk after two consecutive years of reductions.

Unlike previous years where a few carriers dominated fleet growth, 2024 witnessed a more balanced expansion across the top 12 carriers. Nearly all these carriers increased their capacity by more than 6.9%, indicating a more evenly distributed growth trend across the industry.
