  • AI-Powered MarineLabs Project to Enhance Safety and Reduce Emissions.
  • Collaborative Effort Unites MarineLabs, Go Deep, and LeeWay Marine.
  • $4.5M Forecast AI Project Positions Canada as a Leader in Ocean AI.

Canada’s Ocean Supercluster reports that it is launching three ocean innovation projects worth over $9 million, in this case: the $4.5 million Forecast AI Project led by Victoria-based MarineLabs. Improving operational efficiency and enhancing marine safety, these innovations will further propel Canada as a global leader in ocean AI technology.

Forecast AI: Transforming Marine Weather Forecasting

The Forecast AI Project at MarineLabs introduces a pioneering approach to marine weather forecasting. Current public models often fail to account for the complex topographic features influencing local wind and wave patterns, making it challenging for maritime operations, such as vessel approaches and working conditions for mariners. The project will enhance safety, improve efficiency in port operations, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by using hyper-localized and highly accurate forecasts powered by artificial intelligence.

Driving Leadership in Ocean AI

Forecast AI integrates advanced artificial intelligence with data from MarineLabs’ expanding network of sensors to deliver highly accurate forecasts from multiple coastal locations, such as ports. This innovative technology will provide actionable insights to optimize maritime operations, placing Canada at the forefront of marine weather intelligence while strengthening its leadership in the sustainable ocean economy.

Collaborative Partnerships and Funding

The Forecast AI Project is led by MarineLabs in partnership with Go Deep International, based in Saint John, New Brunswick, and LeeWay Marine, based in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. The project is valued at $4.5 million, of which $1.8 million is being contributed by Canada’s Ocean Supercluster, while the rest is coming from its project partners.

Economic Growth and Job Creation

These operations are expected to spur huge economic impacts, directly employing or sustaining more than 50 jobs in data science, software engineering, marine operations, manufacturing, and engineering design. It will also indirectly support the creation of 250 other jobs, building Canada’s ocean economy and generating recurring income through international market sales.

Supporting Canada’s Ambition 2035

As the global ocean economy is expected to grow 20% faster than the broader economy by 2030, Canada has set an ambitious goal to expand its ocean economy fivefold to $220 billion by 2035 under the Ambition 2035 initiative. Continued investments in innovative, homegrown ocean solutions, such as Forecast AI, are crucial to achieving this bold vision and securing Canada’s position as a global leader in sustainable ocean technologies.

Through these transformative projects, Canada’s Ocean Supercluster continues to drive forward the development and commercializatzon of world-leading innovations that will shape the future of the global ocean economy.
