The ITF has urged the Houthi group to cease all attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea, de-escalate threats to shipping, and release any detained seafarers, according to ITF Seafarers.
Release Of Hostages
The ITF remains deeply concerned about the ongoing detention of the crew of a vessel by the Houthis, despite the recent announcements regarding a suspension of attacks on non-Israeli vessels.
- Call for Release: The ITF has reiterated its call for the immediate and unconditional release of all seafarers held hostage by the Houthis.
- Focus on Seafarer Wellbeing: David Heindel, ITF Seafarers’ Section Chair and SIU President, emphasized that the well-being of the detained seafarers must remain a top priority.
This statement highlights the ITF’s continued focus on the humanitarian aspect of this situation and underscores the urgent need for the release of the detained seafarers.
Peace and Stability
Despite the Houthi statements, many in the shipping industry believe the Red Sea trade route remains “too risky” in the foreseeable future. The International Transport Federation (ITF) urges shipping companies and charterers to divert vessels away from the danger zone until the safety of seafarers can be assured.
Heindel, from the ITF, emphasized the organization’s commitment to collaborating with governments, industry stakeholders, and relevant parties to achieve a lasting solution. However, until clear and verifiable assurances for safe passage are in place, the ITF prioritizes the safety of seafarers over commercial considerations.
The ITF welcomed the ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel, stressing the need for full compliance, immediate humanitarian relief for Gaza, and the release of all hostages.
The ITF highlighted the need for long-term stability and the protection of civilians, including transport workers, throughout the region. They emphasized that renewed violence would undermine efforts to restore peace and security in the region.
